This is a zebrafish retina (eye) that is stained with an antibody that recognizes double cone cells (photoreceptors).  It has also been stained with other things to recognize different layers, which is what gives you the colors you see above.  When antibodies are used for staining, this is known as immunohistochemistry (immuno- referring to the immune reaction that creates an antibody and histo- referring to the tissue being stained).  Antibodies are made by injecting the purified protein you want to look at into an animal and collecting the antibodies that are created by the animal’s immune system to target and get rid of the protein.  You can then tag these antibodies (so they will show up as a specific color) and put them over a tissue slice, where they will attach to the protein in the tissue and show you where it is located.

Cymothoa exigua (Tongue-Eating Louse)
These parasites are a part of the crustacean family, believe it or not. It enters the fish through the gills and attaches itself to the base of the tongue. It uses its front pair of claws to suck out blood and this causes the tongue to atrophy, basically, it wastes away until its nonexistent. Once the entire tongue has atrophied, the fish can use the parasite as a perfectly functioning tongue. This is the only known example of a parasite replacing an organ of the host.

    The Black Death Plague Doctor:

A plague doctor was a special medical physician who saw those who had the Bubonic Plague. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, some doctors wore a beak-like mask which was filled with aromatic items. The masks were designed to protect them from putrid air, which (according to the miasmatic theory of disease) was seen as the cause of infection. The protective suit consisted of a heavy fabric overcoat that was waxed. A wooden cane pointer was used to help examine the patient without touching.
